![]() Her purple ensemble sticks out against the backdrop of a gray, decaying city, serving as a reminder of her bright and bubbly demeanor. Princess a vibrant person unlike anyone else we’ve seen in The Walking Dead. As we learn from the comics, she experienced abuse from her stepfather and stepbrother but didn’t receive help from her mother, who “was just happy she wasn’t alone anymore.” Now an adult, Princess feels the complete opposite from her mom, saying she’s “not like” her and would “rather just be alone.” The fact that Princess is so OK with solitude seems to emphasize how much she likes her new friends - because if they weren’t good people, or at least potentially good people (remember, she only recently met Ezekiel and co.), she wouldn’t stick around. ![]() That’s only the beginning of Princess’ sad past. She also acknowledges that she was told she’s “hard to love” before, which explains why she’s so eager to make (and keep) new friends. This has apparently led her to question her own reality, wondering aloud if Eugene, Ezekiel, and Yumiko are really there or if she’s hallucinating them. Princess’ Story Before Meeting The Groupįrom her introduction on the show, we know that Princess was alone in the city for one whole year before encountering her new friends. And while there’s still a lot we don’t know about the character, her comic book counterpart has plenty of history to pull from. The trailer for the upcoming episode, “Splinter,” suggests we’ll get a closer look at Princess’ struggle for survival. But we haven’t seen her again since Season 10c picked up. Eugene, Ezekiel, and Yumiko met her while they were passing through her city on their way to the Commonwealth, and the last we saw, she and the group were receiving a not-so-warm welcome from the soldiers there. "She's the one that tied up the walkers into these little scenarios, so in this episode, I think she's made up this whole scenario like is it some kind of an episode. It may feel like a long time ago now, but Juanita - aka Princess - was only introduced to The Walking Dead earlier in Season 10. "So, I think with Princess, we're always kind of playing like we know she's got this active imagination. "This is somebody who's gone through so much trauma before the apocalypse, but also within the apocalypse and is in a very, very stressful situation," she explained. So then the writers started working on it and had this wild pitch for the twist at the end, which I was not expecting, but which I thought was really interesting."Īngela also spoke about the "challenges" that Princess faces after having been alone for so long, explaining that the stress of being captured stirs up previous trauma that the character has experienced. I think the audience, anytime we have a new character, they're hungry to know more about them and live through their experience. It's got to come through a character's individual experience because then you can live it through what they are seeing, hearing, and experiencing. ![]() "And we're like, the way you can do it is if you make the story about a POV. "We felt like we wanted to touch on but how do you do that and just leave a member of the foursome out of the episode other than via voice and the effect shots?" she said. Showrunner Angela has spoken to Entertainment Weekly about what sparked this reveal about Princess, explaining that the idea initially came about due to filming restrictions caused by COVID-19, which meant that several other actors could not be on set for a time. Later, after we saw Princess speak to several characters, Ezekiel (Khary Payton) appeared to begin violently assaulting one of the soldiers – only for it to be revealed that Princess was actually the one who was beating up the soldier, and it appeared that she had imagined all of her interactions while imprisoned in a train carriage too.
